No Chicken imports for the holidays

The Government will not be allowing the importation of chicken for the holiday season as there is enough poultry products in the market, the Department of Agriculture said.

Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) director Efraim Nuestro said there might even be a surplus of chicken in the market by the time the holidays roll in. “We are not going to import,” he said in a recent interview.

The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a bill that would prohibit the slaughter of carabaos at certain ages of the animal, with lawmakers airing strong belief that this would boost economic productivity.

With the numerous rainy days these past few months, a Quezon City Councilor asked city hall to strictly monitor all local markets especially those at the Balintawak area as hogs, cattle and chicken are susceptible to diseases with the cold weather. Councilor Allan Benedict Reyes of the city’s third district said that there is a great possibility that unsafe meat products will again flood the local markets due to the inclement weather which affects the conditions of the animals.
