Improved Animal Welfare Program (IAWP) Training of Trainers

The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) through the Plant Operation Standards and Monitoring Division (POSMD) and in collaboration with OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) had the Improved Animal Welfare Program (IAWP) Training of Trainers – Part 1 at Lewis Grand Hotel, Angeles City, Pampanga last January 13 to 16, 2014.

OIE Representatives, Dr. Tomasz Grudnik and Dr. Ma. Elaine Joy Villareal, were the lecturers for the 4-day training attended by nine(9) NMIS participants. The IAWP Training focused on principles of animal welfare, humane handling using animal behaviour, transport and unloading of animals, restraint, stunning and bleeding practices and standards in accordance with OIE. Field visits to the slaughterhouse were conducted to observe animal handling and slaughter practices in cattle. Practical exercises on humane handling were conducted using cattle talkers/flags using the principles of flight zone.
