August 11-17, 2014- The NMIS Executive Director Dr. Minda Manantan met with Dr. Anwar El-Tawil, senior expert, deployed by the EU-Philippine Trade Related Technical Assistance Project (EU-PTRTA) and Mr. Jon Echanove, key expert, National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) EU-TRTA. The meeting was held at the request of Atty. Ann Claire C. Cabochon, Director-in-Charge of the Bureau of Philippine Standards.

NMIS Celebrates Nutrition Month

Consistent with the Department of Agriculture’s commitment and advocacy to fight hunger and malnutrition, the NMIS celebrated nutrition month by inviting as resource speaker expert nutritionist, Ms. Ruth Agnes L. Manalo, Chief of the U.P. Health Service Dietary Section. Ms. Manalo lectured primarily on her method of achieving total nutritional health through proper food intake and exercise. She oriented the 45 employees on how to assess individual nutritional status by calculating for body mass index (BMI) and comparing this to the normal levels. She said the right BMI can be achieved by consciously wanting it to happen and by burning, through exercise or work activity, the number of calories we eat.

NMIS Geeks go to GPS, GIS And Cartography Training

The NMIS sent five (5) personnel to the five (5)-day intensive Train the Trainers: GPS, GIS and Cartography for LGUs organized by the Animal Welfare Coalition and the University of Glasgow. The trainees included Rjay Mercado, IT Officer, and Theresa Wenceslao, Meat Inspector III, both of the Planning Division, Alex Bait-it, Meat Inspector III, Enforcement Section and Bernard Buerano, both from Meat Standards Development and Consumer Protection Division (MSDCPD), and Lloyd Sinadjan, Engineering Section. The training was conducted by Mr. Mike Shand, GIS Cartographer of the University of Glasgow in Scotland, U.K. at the University of Makati.

the objective of the
training was to help agencies learn a better way to present data by using Global Positioning System (GPS), Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) and Cartography, the science and practice of making maps. The five day-training included the use of the Garmin Etrex Unit, a GPS gadget, basic commands of the software QGIS, creating maps from vector and raster files using points and polygons, and calculate tracks. On the 5th day, each student-employee submitted the map they created using the Bohol model.

The NMIS realizes the need for accurate information and to process and present these data in an updated and better way. This training will enable this group of NMIS employees to create maps of NMIS offices, accredited meat establishment and, with additional training, to track the movement of meat from the meat establishment to final destinations in real time.

Dr. Orlando C. Ongsotto, Officer-in-Charge (OIC), Plant Operation Standard and Monitoring Division (POSMD), and Dr. Clarita Sangcal, Unit Head of the Meat Safety and Quality Assurance (MSQA) and, concurrently, OIC Regional Technical Director of Region IV-B, successfully completed the 2014 Better Process Control (BPC) School of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, University of Hawaii in Manoa (UHM). The BPC School, as prescribed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture for certification in the areas of thermally processed low acid and acidified foods, was conducted by Dr. Aurora A. Saulo, UHM Professor and Extension Specialist in Food Technology from June 10-13, 2014 at the AIM Conference Center, Makati City .

Dr. Minda S. Manantan, NMIS Executive Director, has been promoting the Food Safety Act of 2013 (RA 10611) to the LGUs and the private sector. She recently presented the pertinent provisions of the Act and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) to the LGUs in Tagbilaran City in Bohol and at the Philippine Swine Forum of 2014 at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) Convention Hall, Quezon City.

NMIS Leads DA in Multisectoral Plan of Action to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance in the Philippine Animal Food Supply

Dr. Minda S. Manantan, Executive Director of the NMIS, attended the World Health Organization (WHO) meeting titled CONSULTATIONS ON PRIORITY ACTIONS IN ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC REGION from July 30-August 1, 2014 at the WHO Offices in Manila. The conference was organized in order to “strengthen the response to various threats posed by antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the Region”. Thirteen (13) Western Pacific Region Member States sent their representatives to the meeting.

Republic of Korea Opens Market Access for Philippine Frozen Fresh Chicken

Republic of Korea (ROK) has given the Philippines access to its $300M market for fresh frozen chicken. The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency of the Republic of Korea (QIA ROK) has notified the Philippine Embassy in Seoul of the approval of the issuance of export quarantine certificates to two Philippine NMIS accredited meat establishments beginning July 28, 2014. These “AAA” poultry dressing plants are Johanna’s Chicken Processing Center, Inc. (JCPCI) and Integrated Meat and Poultry Processing, Inc. (IMPPI). With this approval, the Philippines has three MEs that can export chicken and chicken products to the Republic of Korea. Bounty Fresh Food., Inc. (BFFI) is approved to export chicken under an approval given by the QIA ROK last December 4, 2013.

Slovak Republic Approves Importation of Crocodile Meat from the Philippines

The State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic (SVR RA) has included Coral Agri-Venture Farm, Inc. (CAVFI) in its list of approved establishments for the import of crocodile meat and meat products from the Philippines. In a letter dated June 26, 2014, SVR RA Director General Jozef Bries further informed DA Assistant Secretary Davinio Catbagan and Director Rubina O. Cresencio, Acting Director of the Bureau of Animal Industry, that accreditation of CAVFI to export crocodile meat to the Slovak Republic is now valid.
