DA Undersecretary Jose C. Reaño Calls on NMIS Regional Technical Directors to be Pro-Active in anticipating the needs of the Livestock and Meat Industry for Post-Harvest Facilities

February 3, 2015, BAGIOU CITY. Undersecretary Jose C. Reaño addressed the NMIS Regional Technical Directors, MEIP focal person, the representatives of the DA Livestock agencies and regional offices during the first day of the DA-NMIS Workshop for the Validation of Slaughterhouse Projects for 2016 at the Hotel Supreme, Baguio City. He challenged the participants to support a nationalization policy wherein the outputs of the livestock and meat industry are able to supply the demands of the consumer markets. The location of slaughterhouses should be based on efficiency and productivity- accessibility to livestock farms and to consumers.

Undersecretary Reaño further added that the Livestock agencies should support the growth of competitive meat products e.g. free range chicken, native pork. The NMIS must look to non-traditional export markets from accredited “AAA” meat establishments..

As the country moves towards the ASEAN Economic Integration, the role of the livestock and meat industry is critical. In 2014, it was the only sector that saw a 2% inflation rate for meat and poultry products, the only time this has happened.
