DA Approves new Circular on Hygienic Handling Practices and Use of Mechanically Separated Meat

Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala has signed a new Department Circular (Department Circular No. 09 s. of 2015) prescribing the procedures for hygienic handling and use of mechanically separated meat (MSM) as raw material in the processing of meat products.

The newly signed Circular was published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on January 20, 2016, therefore, this will take effect on February 4, 2016 after the 15-day mandatory publication period.

This Circular was issued to ensure that MSM, as raw material for heat-treated meat products, will be hygienically handled throughout the entire production chain in order to ensure food safety and quality.

It shall serve as guide for Local Government Units (LGUs), Accredited Meat Processors, Meat Handlers and Food Business Operators involved in the meat supply chain using MSM.

This Circular covers the composition, hygienic handling practices and use of MSM from pork, poultry and turkey, both locally produced and imported, as raw materials for production of heat treated meat products. SHIELA B. ENDRINA - Information Officer II
